SUCCESS FOR DSC WITH PILATES!
Dunstable Swimming Club team up with The Pilates Workshop for a new training regime!

Today, our dedicated regional competition targeted swimmers, who are committed to their vigorous training schedules, teamed up with The Pilates Workshop in Dunstable.
The Pilates Workshop put together a specific Pilates programme to help our swimmers achieve their potential for this year’s Regional event.

This year Dunstable Swimming Club achieved the most qualifiers for the East Regional Championships in their history, with 11 junior swimmers going to Regionals in May, and 4 seniors having competed at the end of April. The Pilates Workshop is helping DSC increase their performance with the Pilates technique. Pilates is now practised worldwide by athletes and sports professionals to help prevent injury and increase performance.

Shelley Smith, Director of The Pilates Workshop and Body Control Pilates teacher Louisa Harris, led the session with our swimmers. The session started with a warm up using a foam roller that our swimmers really enjoyed. Shelley Smith said: “Using a foam roller is an essential exercise tool for stretching and stability. A strong, balanced ‘core’ will give a swimmer the power needed in the water and help increase hip mobility, which will improve the technique of the swimmers kick”. Shelley also commented, “Stretching the overworked, tight muscles of the upper body will improve the mobility of the arms and shoulders in the water, together with strengthening the weaker muscles of the shoulder girdle thus helping to avoid injury”.

The highlight of the session was the fitness ball. Both teachers demonstrated the use of the ball to the swimmers and explained that the use of the ball can help the swimmer improve balance and target good hip extension, which is needed when kicking the water.

Dunstable Swimming Club, Head Coach, Tim Hutton, who supported the new training regime said;
“Here at DSC we are always looking for new inventive ways to give our athletes the edge over their opponents. Pilates gives our swimmers opportunities to build their core aquatic skills without swimming miles in the pool. Land training has been a major focus of DSC for a few years now and am hopeful the new Pilates class will be a fantastic addition to this”.

All of the swimmers who took part completed a questionnaire after the Pilates session and unanimously said they enjoyed it and would like to do it again. This is something DSC and The Pilates Workshop is looking into, to ensure we provide a rounded training programme for our swimmers at all levels, enabling each of our swimmers to achieve their full potential.

It is with the greatest sadness that I deliver to you today the heart-breaking news of the death of our colleague, friend and co-founder of The Pilates Workshop - Sue Pickering.

Sue passed away peacefully last Thursday following a short and brave battle with cancer.

Sue loved her work and took the greatest pleasure teaching all her clients, but most of all, she loved being a mother to her two boys.
Our hearts go out to her husband and family, we will all miss Sue dearly.

Rest in Peace beautiful lady.
